Get
your fingerpicking on the Freight Train!
All right boys and girls, here's the next step in your evolution as a fingerstyle player. What we have here is a simplified version of Libby Cotton's "Freight Train" (Not too simple, mind you!). This song employs melody within the Travis style pattern, like " Dust in the Wind", albeit a bit folksier. For this song, use the 4-string pattern on the chords indicated by the TAB, even if the chord covers more than four strings (E, F & G). The timing is easy, so just play it slowly and commit it to memory. It will fall into place nicely. Here's a hint on the G and G7 chords: Use your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fingers to play the G (2nd Finger - 2nd fret on the 5th string • 3rd finger - 3rd fret on the 6th string • 4th finger - 3rd fret on the 1st string). When you switch to the G7, place your 1st finger on the first fret of the 1st string and lift your 4th finger. Leave your 2nd and 3rd fingers planted as you do this. This is called "Economy of Motion" and it enables you to play more complicated fingerings easier. So have fun and practice hard. I'll see you soon!! Azorik Click here to go back. |
